High-Purity Standards (HPS) has worked closely with the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Beryllium Health and Safety Committee (BHSC) since 2006. HPS’s relationship began with the contribution of beryllium oxide spiked filters to a round robin investigation on the effectiveness of methods in use for sample preparation and analysis of high-fired beryllium oxide. The round robin involved 27 different laboratories. Results of the study are document in several papers including, Sample Preparation, Certification and Interlaboratory Analysis of Air Filters Spiked with High-Fired Beryllium Oxide 1.
For High-Purity Standards, this project demonstrated our ability to accurately and precisely manufacture Beryllium Oxide spiked filters. These filters are different from other filter standards that High-Purity Standards offers in that the Beryllium maintains its solid form (as BeO) and is not dissolved in the suspension that is used to spike the filters. High-Purity Standards uses the NIST SRM 1877 as the source material to ensure that a highly-characterized BeO source is used.
Since that initial collaborative effort, High-Purity Standards has continued collaborations with members of the BHSC including the production of BeO in soil. Recently the BHSC Sample and Analysis subcommittee identified a need to investigate analytical techniques to support field detection of Beryllium contaminants in soils. High-Purity Standards is now leading an R&D effort to develop spiked soil LIBS standards. Kelsey Culbertson from HPS will be presenting the initial results of this effort at the National Environmental Monitoring Conference in Washington, D.C. on August 11, 2017. Responding to research needs such as this is one avenue to furthering scientific tools and is necessary in supporting the BHSC mission of supporting the Beryllium worker.
